Report: Seattle Storm expected to hire new, history-making head coach

Sonia Raman, who was an assistant for the New York Liberty, will be the next head coach of the Seattle Storm, ESPN reported on Friday.

Raman will be the first person of Indian descent to be a head coach in the league. She spent one season with the Liberty after four seasons as an assistant with the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Storm announced former head coach Noelle Quinn’s contract would not be renewed after the team’s second consecutive first-round playoff exit. The Storm were 97-89 in five seasons under Quinn. Seattle reached the postseason in four of her five years as head coach but has not won a title since 2020.

The Storm had four All-Stars last season – Skylar Diggins, Nneka Ogwumike, Gabby Williams and Brittney Sykes (with the Washington Mystics) – and all are free agents. Center Dominique Malonga, the No. 2 pick of the 2025 draft, is under contract. She was named to the All-Rookie team after averaging 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds.

The Portland Fire hired Cleveland Cavaliers assistant coach Alex Sarama as their head coach. The Toronto Tempo are expected to hire former New York Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello, and the Dallas Wings are expected to hire longtime University of South Florida head coach Jose Fernandez.

One head coaching vacancy remains in the WNBA: the New York Liberty.
