Mets land outfielder in MLB trade deadline deal

The New York Mets added to their collection of outfielders by acquiring Baltimore Orioles veteran Cedric Mullins two hours before Major League Baseball’s trade deadline, the teams announced.

Mullins, who turns 31 Oct. 1, was an All-Star, Silver Slugger winner and a 30-homer, 30-steal player in 2021. That marked the peak of his offensive production, but he still remains a slightly better than league average hitter while providing sometimes spectacular defense in center field.

He’ll likely share time in center with Tyrone Taylor, flanked by left fielder Brandon Nimmo and right fielder Juan Soto. Utilityman Jeff McNeil has been getting starts in center as well this season.

Mullins marks the fifth player traded by the 50-59 Orioles this month, joining relievers Bryan Baker, Seranthony Dominguez and Andrew Kittredge and infielder Ramon Urías. The club later traded DH Ryan O’Hearn and outfielder Ramon Laureano to the San Diego Padres.

The Orioles will be receiving right-handed pitching prospects Raimon Gómez, Anthony Nunez and Chandler Marsh. Gomez and Marsh are in Class A ball while Nunez, a former two-way player, has reached Class AA and has struck out 60 batters in 40 relief innings at two levels this season.
